In a series of stories called “One Photo, One Story,” I will describe the picture and how it was made. Hopefully, this will inspire you when you are out taking photographs.
The story behind a picture can be a helpful guide and inspiration for your photography.
Street photography is a unique art form that captures the essence of everyday life, often revealing the humour and irony hidden in plain sight. With a camera in hand and an observant eye, one can stumble upon countless comic moments that bring a smile to our faces and a chuckle to our hearts.
Elliott Erwitt, a master of this genre, had an unparalleled ability to see and photograph these fleeting, humorous instances. His work is a testament to the power of observation and the joy of finding the extraordinary in the ordinary. Erwitt’s photographs often feature unexpected juxtapositions, playful interactions, and whimsical scenes that highlight the lighter side of human nature.
I often wondered how he was able to catch these moments, but realised it was down to three basic skills.
One is to have that sense of humour or you wouldn’t see it.
Secondly, being observant of what’s going on around you having your eyes wide open, is essential, or you will miss the scenery.
Thirdly, and very obviously, if you do not bring your camera there will not be a picture.
You might spot a dog peering curiously out of a car window, its expression mirroring that of the driver. Completely absorbed in it´s little world. I can imagine it drives away in a few moments.
Photographs that extend the story beyond what is seen, have a quality that puts them on a higher level.
This moment happened while driving away after parking at a gas station, so I simply stopped the car again and jumped out so I didn’t miss this moment.
These moments don’t come often. Therefore I always carry my camera. I wouldn’t have slept last night if I had forgotten to carry my camera and missed this shot.
