A Journey Through the Lens: 37 Years of Capturing Moments

The Thursday blog post this week is a bit self reflecting and egocentric. Bear over with me this time.

In a career spanning over three decades, I have witnessed the media world transform in ways unimaginable. As a photo and video journalist, my journey has been a tapestry of diverse experiences, each thread woven with stories of resilience, innovation, and creativity.

I use all of this experience when i teach students. If it is professionals or amateurs who wants to know their camera better and seek new inspiration.

I put in the exact same engagement, because i feel everybody deserves it and I still think it is all fun. It’s playtime every time there in opportunity to learn and express myself through photography.

My passion for photography

  • and videography began in the late 1980s, where I honed my skills as a photographer at especially Nordisk Film Broadcast. These early years were foundational, setting the stage for a career that would see me capturing moments for books, magazines, and various media platforms.

From 1991 to 1993, I embraced the freelance life, working with renowned broadcasters like DR, Metronome, TV1, and Nordisk Film Broadcast. This period was marked by versatility and adaptability, as I navigated different projects and storytelling styles.

In 1993, I took on the role of Chief Photographer at Delta Production, where I led a team in creating compelling visual narratives. This experience paved the way for my long-standing tenure at TV2Fyn, starting in 1996. Here, I have been privileged to document countless stories, from local news to major events.

Highlights

A recent highlight of my career was my solo photo exhibition at Odeon in Odense, Denmark, in 2023. This exhibition, centered around Odense Football Club, was a celebration of my work and a testament to my dedication to the craft.

Recognition has come in various forms, including the prestigious Danish Press Photographers Association award for Best News Video Journalist in 2014 and the European Circom Award in 2002 for “The Last Stitch.” These accolades are not just personal milestones but also reflections of the collaborative efforts and support from my peers and mentors.

My portfolio is rich with diverse productions, from photographing Danish Prime Ministers for a book published by Politikens Forlag and DR, to working on TV2 productions like Fak2ren and Elevatoren. I have also been the chief photographer for special Christmas series and covered major sports events, documentaries, short films, news, and feature stories.

Continue learning – you are newer finished

Continuous learning has been a cornerstone of my career. I have pursued advanced training in Photoshop and Lightroom, storytelling with Boyd Huppert and Jonathan Malat, color grading at the Short- and Documentary Film School in Denmark, and lately filmic narrative form at the Danish Film School in 2024. These educational experiences have kept me at the forefront of the industry, enabling me to adapt to new technologies and storytelling techniques. Something I transfer to my own courses which you can join.

Everytime I can I seek inspiration in books, magazines and visiting exhibitions. Not to copy but to reflect and find inspiration for my own work.

As I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities and experiences that have shaped me. The media world is ever-changing, but my commitment to capturing and sharing stories remains steadfast. Here’s to many more years of exploring the world through the lens and telling stories that matter.

I am 61 years old now and I still feel there is world of time ahead of me to teach and to learn.
