Photographic themes

Photos tell much more than 1000 words. They mean more than an inscription on a gravestone. A graveyard in Tuscany we walked into on an earlier trip opened up a scenery I hadn’t seen before.

Photographic themes can be difficult to make up out of nothing. Sometimes you must stumble upon them and then take a series on a specific subject. This ended up as a single series from one place, but I was drawn so much by the atmosphere so I didn’t just do one or two pictures.

In other cases, I stumble on a photographic theme by repeating some types of pictures. I then collect them in specific folders as a copy, so I have these thematic photos in one place. Stored for a future visual tale, a book or exhibition maybe.

This is also a good point to consider if you join one of my workshops. Don’t think too much about it. Just take the photos you feel for and then afterwards when sorted out, there might be a pattern of interest.

The next workshop is in Paris from 14-15 September. A few spots are open. Read more here.
The graveyard still is in my mind, and resisting the photos makes me relive a special moment. The photos on the gravestones and ornaments kept the memory of the people buried much more vibrant than just a note with a date and a name. It may sound wrong but it brought the person alive having their photos a memory. Just that one special photo telling a lot.
