Small sizes cameras for street photography
On my street photo workshops a variety of cameras are present. Let’s look at 3 of the smaller ones today.
Small cameras are great for street photography, so let’s break down the differences between the Leica M, Leica Q, and Fuji X100V, focusing on their key features and how they impact street photography.
There are other cameras around but these are my favourites. Next time I look into medium sized cameras.
At the bottom of this post is a small poll where you can select the camera you use. Please also leave a comment if you like at the comment box below the post.
Leica M
Rangefinder System: The Leica M series uses a rangefinder focusing system, which is different from the electronic viewfinders (EVFs) found in the other two cameras. This system allows for precise manual focusing and a unique shooting experience.
Full-Frame Sensor: Leica M cameras typically feature a full-frame sensor, providing excellent image quality, dynamic range on the newer models, and good low-light performance.
Interchangeable Lenses: The M series supports a wide range of high-quality Leica M-mount lenses, giving you flexibility in choosing the right lens for your style.
Build Quality: Leica M er known for both the very classic look and for their robust build and classic design, being cameras are durable and have a timeless aesthetic.
Leica Q
Fixed Lens: The Leica Q series comes with a fixed 28mm f/1.7 lens, which is ideal for street photography due to its wide-angle perspective and fast aperture. The newer Q3 comes with the 43mm focal length, with purpose of this camera being ideal for street and travel photographers who prefer to shoot at a more natural focal length close to what the human eye sees.
Full-Frame Sensor: Like the M series, the Q also features a full-frame sensor, ensuring high image quality and excellent performance in various lighting conditions.
Autofocus: Unlike the manual focus system of the M series, the Q has a fast and accurate autofocus system, making it easier to capture spontaneous moments.
EVF: The Q series includes an electronic viewfinder, providing a clear and detailed preview of your shot, which can be helpful in bright conditions.
Fuji X100V
A camera I have enjoyed using earlier, and it still has some attraction.
APS-C Sensor: The Fuji X100V features an APS-C sensor, which is smaller than the full-frame sensors in the Leica cameras but still offers excellent image quality and a good balance between size and performance.
Fixed Lens: It comes with a fixed 23mm f/2 lens (equivalent to 35mm on full-frame), which is versatile for street photography and provides a slightly narrower field of view compared to the Leica Q.
Hybrid Viewfinder: The X100V has a unique hybrid viewfinder that combines an optical viewfinder (OVF) and an electronic viewfinder (EVF), giving you the flexibility to switch between the two based on your preference.
Compact and Lightweight: The X100V is more compact and lighter than both Leica models, making it highly portable and less conspicuous for street photography than larger camera models.
Advanced Features: It includes modern features like weather sealing, 4K video recording, and a tilting touchscreen, which add to its versatility.
Conclusion
- Leica M: Best for photographers who prefer manual focusing, interchangeable lenses, and a classic rangefinder experience.
- Leica Q: Ideal for those who want a full-frame sensor with a fixed wide-angle lens and fast autofocus in a compact package.
- Fuji X100V: Great for photographers looking for a compact, versatile camera with a hybrid viewfinder and modern features.
Each camera has its strengths, and the best choice depends on your specific needs and shooting style. Happy shooting! 📸
I added a poll to the blog post, so you can tell what camera you prefer.
